Afghan cricketer scores T20 double hundred !!!

The past few months have been quite eventful for Afghanistan cricket. After the dream debut for Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi in the recently concluded Indian Premier League, their national team performed exceptionally well in their series against West Indies. Their constant good performance over the years have been rewarded by the ICC with a Test Membership status.

Adding another highpoint, yesterday wicketkeeper batsman Shafiqullah Shafaq scored a quickfire 214 in just 71 balls. In his breathtaking knock, he hit 21 maximums and 16 boundaries. The match was played in a local tournament (Paragon Nangarhar Champion Trophy). With the help of his 214, his team Khateez Cricket Academy scored a massive 351 and in the process handsomely defeated Kabul Star Cricket Club who scored only 107 in reply.

Shafaq has made a total of 35 T20I and 20 ODI appearances for his national side, making his T20I debut for Afghanistan against Ireland in 2010. A regular member of the team, he was part of Afghanistan's campaigns in the last three editions of the ICC World T20 (2012, 2014, 2016).

I have fond memories of the 33 rd  National Games in Guwahati. My city was decorated like a bride. A well maintained traffic system, clean roads and a plethora of sportstars in the city. It was more of an extended celebration for most citizens. And more recently, the first season of the ISL, Guwahati  had never seen something so grand. Be it the football stars or our very own Bollywood heroes, people thronged to the stadium to have a glimpse of them. Even my friends in Delhi have similar memories of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Come October 2017, the country is set to experience one of the biggest sporting extravaganza it has ever seen. India is all set to host the 17 th  edition of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
